Since this edition of Freebie Friday falls on a Font Hour week, we thought it would be appropriate to give away a free font. You might remember Aaron’s pick, Pointy. Well, even though it didn’t win the competition, we were able to pick it up because it is FREE. You can get it by going here:

Now go download it and have some fun with Pointy!

Yesterday we sat down for another Orange Element Font Hour. For those of you that want to learn more about how Font Hour works, go HERE. Yesterday’s contenders were as follows:
Tarzana
Montag (Not Heidi)
Filosofia
Paragraph
Mrs Eaves
Pointy
Matthia
And this, for entertainment purposes:
It was interesting that three of the fonts chosen for this month’s Font Hour were designed by the same designer: Zuzana Licko, the founder of Emigre. Even still, EJ picked the winner when she picked Montag, designed by Jeremy Dooley of Insigne Type Foundry.
Aaron gets the creativity award for the poster he designed to highlight his pick for this month:

Ok, it’s not Freebie Friday, but I’m still giving something away. I’ve been reading a really great book by Maggie Macnab called Decoding Design and I came across a typeface that was referenced in the book that I really liked, so I looked it up. It is called Culture.ca and the design firm that created it, David Berman Communications, is giving it away in both PC and Mac versions on their site (for non-commercial use)!
Go HERE to download the font.

I’ll post more when I’m finished reading Maggie’s book, but so far it’s a great read about the importance of using symbols in visual communications. My favorite so far part is the case studies at the end of each chapter (which is how I found Culture.ca).

We just had our most recent version of Font Hour here at OE and I wanted to share the news. Those of you who don’t recall Font Hour, can go HERE to check out a recap of the prior Font Hour.
This time, we had some really stiff competition. Among the potential new fonts that we were considering purchasing were:
FP Head
Wrongway
Vista
Gagarin
Goldenbook
This month’s winner: WRONGWAY. A quick sample is below.
Check out more about this sweet font and the shop that created it HERE.

Mary Mashburn, our coaster guru, recently received some stellar press in the New York Times. Mary runs Typecast Press, which is where we recently had our sweet Orange Element coasters letterpressed. You can see them here, next to her work for Woodberry Kitchen, which is actually the subject of the Times article.
The article is about designers creating custom typefaces. It’s a great article and worth the read, so please check it out in its entirety HERE. This article really REALLY makes us want to come up with our own Orange Element house font…
Congrats Mary/Typecast - you guys rock!
