Penguin Classics has created a series of clothbound novels, designed by Illustrator Coralie Bickford-Smith. Each book in the series is a true work of art, and is bound in an elegant colored bookcloth and stamped with a one-color foil stamp of a pattern inspired by the work within. Penguin is already on it’s second series of these books after the success of the first. Available from Anthropologie and other stores nationwide. “1 0f 1500″ is a 10-Year retrospective book highlighting the collaboration between JDK (Jager Di Paola Kemp) Design, Higher Ground, and the Iskra Print Collective. It showcases over 120 silk-screened music posters and features comments by the designers and the bands themselves. The cover is silkscreened and hand-numbered out of 1500 copies (hence the title “1 of 1500″). Go get yourself a copy (available here) while you still can!

Engrave Your Book curates an artist series of engraved leather covers for Moleskine® notebooks, and you can even get custom covers engraved for yourself or your company! Who said pop-up books were for children? Check out this video showcasing Marion Bataille’s brilliantly done ABC3D pop-up book. Marion is a graphic artist and illustrator living in France. Debuting in October of 2008, ABC3D is her first book published in the UK. You can find it online and at Target. While the video is great, I recommend getting your hands on the real thing to experience the true element of surprise. My favorite is the O, P to Q, R overlay and the mirror W to V.

What cost 25 cents in 1942 and still puts a smile on everyone’s face today? The Little Golden Books series of course. From now until May 9th, one of our favorite locations–the Central Library of Baltimore–is hosting an exhibition of original illustrations from the series. Shown here are two of my personal favorites, The Saggy Baggy Elephant and Scuffy the Tugboat. The opening reception is this Saturday, March 7th starting at 2:30.

Marks features 400 logos Pentagram has designed over the years, dating back to 1962. If this is anything like the Black Book (which we were fortunate enough to win in a contest), Marks should be amazing! It is being produced in a limited edition of 1,000 copies and is printed on French-folded bible paper, bound in a red, cloth-covered softback cover and includes five ribbons for bookmarking. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy-Pentagram’s work is always a great inspiration.

Check out these cool retro book designs by Spacesick. Inspired by 60′s book covers, these designs are based on fictitious novelizations of classic films and movies. Some are more believable as actual books, and some are a bit unexpected–Space Jam and Ernest? Either way, the attention to detail and quality of illustration in these pieces is outstanding.
