Trouble The Water :: Go See It

Friday, October 31st, 2008

A couple of us went to go see an advanced screening of the documentary entitled “Trouble the Water” at MICA the other night. The screening was a part of the Maryland Film Festival’s Friends of the Festival screening series - if you’re not a member, you should be. Find out more HERE.

Trouble the Water is an amazing film.  It’s a documentary about Hurricane Katrina that chronicles the plight of a married couple that is forced to stay behind as the storm hits and tries to pick up the pieces afterwards. This film was recently given the Grand Jury Award for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

It’s dramatic, moving, inspiring, funny, heartbreaking and eye-opening all at the same time. Here’s the trailer:

Please go see this film. It opens today at the Charles Theater and will be there for about a week.  If the reception is warm, they may even decide to keep it there for a while, so please go support it.  You’ll be doing your part to raise awareness of the suffering of the folks down there.

Go visit Troublethewaterfilm.com and hook up with them on Facebook and MySpace too.

Thanks,

We Have Been Challenged!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Last Thursday started out like any other Thursday, really.  That all changed when I checked in on Twitter (are you following me yet?) and found a link posted by another Baltimore marketing communications firm at 9:03a.m. that directed me to this image:

From that point, I knew something was brewing.  I waited patiently for this challenge to surface, and at 9:48a.m. the next day, it arrived:

Nifty little video, there. MGH WOM, I know you’re listening.  The training has begun and it is officially on, my friends. We do not take to challenges lightly and will come prepared. Stay tuned.

Tilt-Shift

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Hi all - I’ve missed blogging over the past few days due to our move. I’m glad to say we’re now in our new office in Fell’s Point and we’re very excited to be here. Please note our new address:

330 S. Broadway
Baltimore, Md. 21231

We’ll post pictures and more information soon, but now back to some really cool stuff. BrandflakesforBreakfast wrote this morning about a new photography technique that is starting to increase in popularity: Tilt-shift photography.  As a photography novice, I don’t have the slightest clue how to achieve this effect, but it’s really cool.  Check out this link for some stellar examples: http://www.flickr.com/groups/tilt-shift-fakes/pool/

And here’s a pretty cool stop motion video made from tilt-shift photographs:

Some New Faces!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

I’d like to take a moment to welcome two awesome new folks here at Orange Element: Rachel Stuart and Jasmine Sarp.  Rachel is our newest graphic designer and Jasmine is our intern for the Fall semester.  Let me tell you a little more about them…

Rachel is a recent graduate of the University of Delaware with a BFA in Visual Communications.  If you’re counting, that’s TWO UDEL grads here at Orange Element now (Both Sarah and Rachel want me to say “GO HENS”).  She joins us after an internship in the winter of 2007/2008 with Toth Brand Imaging in Cambridge, Massachussetts. Her favorite TV shows are The Office, Project Runway, Top Chef and Entourage.   She’s an awesome fit here and we’re lucky to have been able to recruit her to join us!

Jasmine is a junior Graphic Design major at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She admires the work of M.C. Escher, Stefan Sagmeister, Ralph Steadman, and Alphonse Mucha. She loves cooking, reading, her motorbike, and Virginia. She has done a few freelance jobs for clients including the New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland. She is very excited to be interning at Orange Element and hopes it helps her to sharpen her skills as a graphic designer.

Welcome to the both of you.  We are pumped to have you on our team!!

Orange Element Has A Visitor

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Happy Friday all. It’s beautiful today here in Baltimore - no humidity, sun, breeze, etc. A great day from start to finish - especially since we’ve had a visitor in the studio…

I brought Layla to work today. She’s been on her best behavior all day, and got a great tour of the Inner Harbor at lunchtime. She even did some client work…and then she ate it.

Check her out in all her glory. I <3 her.

Soft Incentives = Happy Employees = Stronger Work

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

What better way to celebrate our 200th post on Orange Element’s blog than to talk about some recent coverage we received in a national magazine called Incentive! The magazine caters to executives looking to improve company performance and we were very flattered to be featured in an article on ’soft incentives’ or non-financial incentives.

You can read the full article which was also published to Brandweek by clicking HERE, but here are a few paragraphs about us:

Extra vacation days and paid leave can help motivate, but fun time on the job can be an effective incentive as well. Small Baltimore-based design and visual communications firm Orange Element takes a creative approach to its monthly Fun Day, a daylong opportunity for team members to shut off their computers and do something recreational together. “Not only is it an opportunity to blow off some steam, but it really does help us grow as a team,” says Aaron Moore, principal and creative director. “We’ve found that in an industry riddled with deadlines and high-pressure situations, taking a break to refocus creates happier, less-stressed employees, which in turn creates even better work.”

The office field trips can provide intellectual experiences that are in line with the company’s creative goals as well. “So much of design is about perspective-and it’s hard to have a good sense of perspective when you’re stuck in an office all the time,” Moore says. “Fun Days get us out of the office to experience new things and help us keep an open mind.”

Orange Element Fun Days so far have included paintball at a partner firm, snowboarding, baseball games, golf and duckpin bowling, all in the name of a good time. “I think there is a direct correlation between the amount of fun we are all having here and the quality of the work that we produce,” says Moore. “Making sure that we’re having fun allows us to be fun people, and that’s a big part of what our clients love about us.”

Orange Element maintains the fun the rest of the month with a lighthearted blog, which employees contribute to, and a pinball machine and putting mat set up in the office. And they aren’t just for show, says Garret Ohm, marketing director.

“The perception is that design firms are lavish spaces with rooms filled with toys. But the harsh reality is that in most firms, this is only a façade,” he says. “Most employees are too scared to endure the countless evil stares from upper management if they try to spend any time during the day doing non-billable work.” Not so at his office, where “the games are used all the time.”

Sweet - even the blog was mentioned in the article! This article hit it on the head, though. We’re big believers in creating an environment where there is a healthy work-life balance. We feel as though it’s important to have fun and stay happy because we know we do our strongest creative work when we’re not bogged down by the stress and anxiety that so often infiltrates the corporate world.
