Clothbound Penguin Classics
Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Penguin Classics has created a series of clothbound novels, designed by Illustrator Coralie Bickford-Smith. Each book in the series is a true work of art, and is bound in an elegant colored bookcloth and stamped with a one-color foil stamp of a pattern inspired by the work within. Penguin is already on it’s second series of these books after the success of the first. Available from Anthropologie and other stores nationwide. Also, check out some more of the artist’s work on her website.
And The Ultimate Font Hour Champion Is……
Monday, December 14th, 2009Well, it’s the moment you have all been waiting for. After much deliberation and some help from our good friend Dave Stock, the winner of last Friday’s Font Hour was “Chunk” submitted by Neal Shaffer via twitter.
This ultra-bold slab serif from the League of Movable Type caught everyone’s eye for its old American Western woodcut feel. And as a face who is used mainly for display, it will stand out strong in our storefront windows.
Narrowing it down to one favorite was difficult as you can see from the large number of great submissions in the photos above. Other leading contenders that made the top five included Proxima Nova, Firehouse, Liza, and Stanislawski.
Thanks to everyone for your great font submissions. Congratulations Neal! We will be designing posters featuring Chunk over the next few weeks so keep your eyes on our storefront windows and here on the blog to see this winning font strut it’s stuff!
Font Hour Freebie Friday
Friday, December 11th, 2009Fire Graphics
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009As a kid I remember asking my mom why the lettering on the front of an ambulance was backward. Perhaps the sign of an early graphic designer, but it definitely sparked an affinity for vehicle signage. With the recent news of Baltimore area fire station closures and job relocations, I’ve been thinking about the art form of truck lettering. In appreciation of local firefighters, enjoy some of the images below and the video of application. Also check out this page of fire truck inspired fonts (hint, hint font hour).
