This has to have been inspired by the Memory Motel, which is technically in Wildwood Crest, but still has a very retro feel to it. All of the rooms have murals in them, and of course there’s the swimming pool, with the Stones’ “tongue” logo for a pool slide and the Yellow Submarine painted on the bottom.

I love that marquee: “Yes, we got the pancakes.”

I can’t tell Googie from Streamline Moderne from Raygun Gothic, but it’s all cool to me.

Anaheim, California is full of this stuff, as Disney arrived in the early 60s and the whole “Atomic Age” is reflected in a lot of the surroundings.

Oober cool stuff G. I had a similiar but not nearly as all encompassing experience on my vacation. In the middle of nowhere in VA, on the way to Smith Mountain Lake, we stumbled upon a super retro ice cream parlor that had just opened. It was actually worth eating the ice cream THERE. I was honestly a little upset that I grew up with Baskin Robbins as opposed to something like that.

I’m a sucker for this stuff. Was born in 1966 and some of my earliest memories are the funky late 60s neon logos, seen out the car window with my dad’s shaved head up high in front.

These designs work on two levels: Hope — so much was tied to the space race and the idea that chrome-winged jet hovercrafts were just around the corner — and humanity — these things were created before computer tools so often have the rough edges of real draftsmen.

So cool. Thanks for the trip back.

I've never been to Wildwood, but this kind of stuff is one of my favorite things about Los Angeles. There's a great book you might want to check out -- Googie Redux: Ultramodern Roadside Architecture by Alan Hess. A wealth of pictures, research, etc.
